About This Tool

Leadership effectiveness continues to be one of the most critical enablers (or disablers) of organizational success. Only a fraction of today's organizations have become really good at identifying, nurturing and retaining their leaders. Many still struggle over deciding just what "Leadership" is. And it's easy to see why. There may well be more books, experts and advisors on Leadership than there are on any other business topics. The array of ideas, models and techniques can be mind-numbing.

This tool is the result of our work with, or research of, several dozens of those books, models and such. Interestingly, when they are looked at side-by-side, there are two conclusions that can be drawn. First, there is no really new or sure-fire approach to effective leadership. Secondly, there are far more similarities in these myriad models than there are differences. This tool pulls together the elements that were most common in some of the more popular and effective approaches. It is by no means meant to be exhaustive.

Using This Tool

The General Leadership Assessment tool is primarily used to assess the degree to which individual leaders demonstrate the common critical success factors. The assessment can indicate areas to which training, development and coaching efforts might be focused. The factors are organized into six competency domains:

  • Visionary/Strategic Thinker
  • Change Agent/Transformer
  • Influencer & Communicator
  • Motivator & Manager of Peak Performance
  • Individual Coach & Mentor
  • Builder of Teams & Capabilities

It can also be used to assess a leadership team by having the team members individually rate the team's collective performance in each area, tally the results, and use them to facilitate a discussion about strengths and areas needing improvement. The tool also provides some insights into specific competencies and skills that can be used to interview candidates for leadership positions, as well coach candidates and current leaders.
